Empowering the Most Vulnerable: How the Sisters of Mary Transform Students' Lives Through Education
Children who are orphans or come from the most impoverished and disadvantaged families in the communities and neighborhoods of the Korea, Philippines, Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil, Honduras, and Tanzania face overwhelming challenges.
These young boys and girls often toil for long hours on the streets or in the slums of these regions to earn a meager income. They are exposed to the risks of disease, early marriage, or even a life of crime. They lack the basic necessities for survival—adequate shelter, regular nutrition, healthcare, and clean drinking water. Without access to quality education, they are deprived of the hope for a better future.
At the Sisters of Mary, we provide these children with equal opportunities for a good education, empowering them to rise above poverty and the difficult circumstances of their early lives. Armed with the right skills, children who complete our programs are able to secure local jobs, becoming productive, independent members of society who can support their parents and lift their families out of poverty.
For over sixty years, the Sisters have cared for more than 180,000 children across 13 schools in these countries. Each year, we welcome nearly 20,000 desperate children into our care. With deep dedication, compassion for the poor, and expertise in education, the Sisters ensure that together, we deliver an exceptional education for the most vulnerable children—at a fraction of the cost.
As one of the chosen students of the Blessed Mother from among thousands who applied to study at the Sisters of Mary School, a student now belongs to a Marian family under the patronage of Mary, the Virgin of the Poor. Therefore, each student is expected to fulfill the four (4) basic duties following the order of the priority:
a. Study. The main duty of students at the Sisters of Mary School is to excel in the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and values in all learning areas. Furthermore, they should strive to acquire intensive skills in vocational courses, specializing in fields responsive to the needs of the industry and society. Most importantly, they should pursue excellence in their spiritual formation, which is an integral part of their learning process.
b. Pray. It is also the duty of students to pray and practice virtues as their spiritual payment for all the blessings they receive from God through the Sisters of Mary School.
c. Work. It is an important duty of students to value work, possess diligence, and demonstrate discipline in the performance of the daily tasks assigned to them, signifying their participation in God’s redeeming work.
d. Play. With a joyful and cheerful disposition, students must participate in sports and worthwhile games to channel their energy, enjoy, and bring joy to others.
